Snapping Hip Syndrome
Snapping hip syndrome is a condition where people notice a snapping, popping, or clicking sensation around the hip when they move. For some, it is something they can feel. For others, it is loud enough to hear, which can make it feel quite strange or worrying, especially if it starts happening repeatedly.
In many cases, the snapping itself is not painful. Some people are mainly bothered by the sensation or the sound rather than any real discomfort. That said, it can become painful if the tissue involved starts to get irritated or inflamed from repeatedly flicking over a bony point. Once that happens, the hip can feel sore, tight, or uncomfortable during certain movements, especially if the same action keeps being repeated.
There are a few different types of snapping hip. The most common is where the iliotibial band, or ITB, snaps over the outside of the hip. This tends to be felt on the outer side of the hip and is often noticed when walking, bending, getting up from a chair, or moving the leg in a certain way. Another type is internal snapping hip, which involves the iliopsoas tendon snapping over bony structures inside the pelvis. This is more often felt in the groin and usually develops gradually rather than after one obvious injury. A third type, known as capsular snapping hip, is less common and is usually linked to trauma. This involves the capsule of the hip joint and is more likely to be seen after a hip dislocation or subluxation, particularly in younger people.
What patients often want to know is whether the snapping means something serious is wrong. In many cases it is more of a mechanical issue than a major injury, but if it becomes painful or starts affecting movement, it is worth assessing properly. The pattern, location, and what brings it on usually give us a good idea of what is driving it.
How We Treat Snapping Hip Syndrome
Treatment depends on what type of snapping hip it is and whether it is painful or simply annoying. At Crestacre, we would look at where the snapping is happening, what movements trigger it, and whether there are any underlying factors such as tightness, weakness, poor control, or biomechanical issues that may be contributing.
If the snapping is coming from the outside of the hip, we may focus on reducing tension through the ITB and improving the way the hip is being loaded. If it is coming from the groin, we would look more closely at the hip flexors and the iliopsoas tendon. In some cases, the hip joint itself may be part of the picture, particularly if there has been a history of trauma.
Treatment may include hands-on therapy, exercises to improve strength and control, and advice on modifying the movements or activities that keep provoking the problem. The aim is to calm any irritation, improve how the hip moves, and reduce the chances of the snapping becoming a recurring issue.
If the snapping is painless, treatment may not always be needed. But if it is causing discomfort or affecting daily life, it is worth addressing properly rather than just hoping it will settle on its own.
