Trapped Nerve Pain Treatment in Walsall

Expert Trapped Nerve Pain treatment at Crestacre Chiropractic

Trapped nerve pain is something we see very frequently in clinic, affecting both the upper and lower limbs. It occurs when a nerve becomes irritated or compressed, often in the spine, leading to symptoms that can travel along the path of that nerve.

For some people, the pain stays fairly local, spreading slightly into the shoulder or buttock region. For others, it can fully radiate down the arm into the fingers or down the leg into the toes.

Trapped nerves can present in a few different ways. One common type is a deep, aching pain that can feel similar to toothache. It is often quite vague and difficult to pinpoint. This is known as radicular pain, where an entire area supplied by the same nerve becomes painful.

Another presentation is a sharp, electric or shooting pain that can suddenly “zip” from one area to another. Sciatica is a well-known example of this. This type of pain can come on quickly and may be intense enough to catch you off guard. It typically follows the path of the nerve, such as from the neck into the arm or from the lower back down the leg.
Many people also experience changes in sensation. This can include tingling, pins and needles, or unusual skin sensations in specific areas of the body. In some cases, there may be reduced sensation or numbness instead.

In more advanced cases, a trapped nerve can affect muscle function, leading to weakness or a feeling that a limb is not working properly or does not quite feel like your own.

How We Treat Trapped Nerve Pain

Treatment is focused on relieving pressure on the irritated nerve and restoring normal movement. We often explain to patients that nerve tissue is a bit like the “spoilt brat” of the body—if its environment isn’t quite right, it will let you know fairly quickly.

At Crestacre, we use a combination of hands-on and rehabilitative approaches. This may include mobilisation or manipulation of the spine (or other areas where the nerve may be compressed), as well as traction techniques to create more space and allow the nerve to move more freely.

We may also use LASER therapy to help reduce inflammation, which can contribute to ongoing nerve irritation. Alongside this, we prescribe targeted rehabilitation exercises to support recovery and improve movement.

Importantly, we also work to identify and address the underlying cause of the nerve irritation. This may relate to movement patterns, postural habits, or previous tissue injury, helping to reduce the likelihood of the problem returning.
